MISSION statement:

We are a group of Catholics, some of whom are ordained, brought together by our love of Christ's Church and our anxiety about its future. Still inspired by the Second Vatican Council, we want to contribute fully to the life of our Church so that we may be a more effective sign of the Kingdom of God. To do this, we believe that an atmosphere of openness and dialogue both with each other and with our church leadership needs developing. Accordingly, we aim to supply channels of free and frank communication. We desire to help create a climate of trust and respect for all where this dialogue may be fostered.

THEOLOGY statement:

ACTA is a movement built from below by clergy and laity alike in every diocese in England and Wales. It exists to give those people an effective voice. It is an instrument to establish and promote space for a trusting dialogue within a hierarchically structured people’s Church.

ACTA believes that the reforms of the Second Vatican Council are the only way forward for mission to modern society. It is not a small chapel of selected followers; it believes in the Church as a “big tent”, with open doors. As a free and representative association of believers, it seeks to liberate the expertise in the ranks, so as to bring added energy and witness to the Church in the world.

ACTA National Conference

The Parish? The Now and Future Church

10.30 - 16.30   Saturday 22nd  October  2022

The Board of Trustees of ACTA have announced the arrangements for the
National Conference on Saturday 22 nd October. Members were consulted in
April about the possibility of a physical Conference but the majority of the
responses suggested that many would prefer one delivered via Zoom, at least for
this year.

The theme of this year’s Conference is an examination of the role and function
of the parish in a technological, post-Covid world. How will our sense of parish
be shaped by our experience of synodality? What changes need to occur for it to
be the prophetic voice in our communities? How do we manage ministry in a
parish in the future?

Our principal speaker this year will be Dr Phyllis Zagano, Senior Research
Associate-in-Residence, Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York. She was
appointed by Pope Francis to the Commission studying the role of women in the
diaconate. Her academic interests include forms of ministry and ecclesial
reform.

Some dioceses are starting to address the issues raised by their synodal process.
Issues of development and formation [ of clergy and laity] were raised in the vast
majority of diocesan reports. We will be hearing from teams from the
Archdiocese of Liverpool, the Diocese of Salford and the Archdiocese of Cardiff
on how they plan to take forward some of these key issues.

Dr Liam Hayes: Director, Centre for Ecclesial Ethics, Margaret Beaufort Institute, Cambridge

Dr Phyllis Zagano: Senior Research Associate-in-residence, Hofstra New York

ALL Zoom Conference donations will be forwarded to Dr Zagano's chosen charity.

Download: Synod National Synthesis England & Wales

This synthesis describes the diocesan phase of the synod on synodality between November 2021 and March 2022, seeking to capture the essence of what emerged from the unprecedented participation by the People of God in England and Wales in a world-wide synod process. It is drawn from over 700 pages of reports from the dioceses and other church organisations, associations and movements that were sent to the national synthesis team

National Justice & Peace Network

Programme Outline  - NJPN Conference Booking form 31 May

Friday evening:

Philip McDonagh will speak of a hope that requires courage – upright action for the sake of the future. Hope is rational – an escapist fantasy does not qualify as hope in action.

"Philip is co-author of the recently published work "On the Significance of Religion for Global Diplomacy" (Routledge 2021), Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at Dublin City University, and Director of the Centre for Religion, Human Values, and International Relations.

As a serving Irish diplomat, as Political Counsellor in London, Philip played a part in the Northern Ireland peace process in the build-up to the Good Friday Agreement. He later served as Head of Mission in India, the Holy See, Finland, Russia, and the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe).

Philip has published poetry and works for the theatre, including The Song the Oriole Sang (Dedalus Press, Dublin, 2010) and Gondla, or the Salvation of the Wolves (Arlen House 2016), a translation of Nikolai Gumilev's Irish-themed play written during WWI”
