MISSION statement:

We are a group of Catholics, some of whom are ordained, brought together by our love of Christ's Church and our anxiety about its future. Still inspired by the Second Vatican Council, we want to contribute fully to the life of our Church so that we may be a more effective sign of the Kingdom of God. To do this, we believe that an atmosphere of openness and dialogue both with each other and with our church leadership needs developing. Accordingly, we aim to supply channels of free and frank communication. We desire to help create a climate of trust and respect for all where this dialogue may be fostered.

THEOLOGY statement:

ACTA is a movement built from below by clergy and laity alike in every diocese in England and Wales. It exists to give those people an effective voice. It is an instrument to establish and promote space for a trusting dialogue within a hierarchically structured people’s Church.

ACTA believes that the reforms of the Second Vatican Council are the only way forward for mission to modern society. It is not a small chapel of selected followers; it believes in the Church as a “big tent”, with open doors. As a free and representative association of believers, it seeks to liberate the expertise in the ranks, so as to bring added energy and witness to the Church in the world.

Listen Again...

The Roman Catholic Church should give clergy the option to marry, says a former priest.

The comments from Alex Walker from the Advent group came after the former head of Scottish Catholics, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, admitted sexual misconduct.

Church reform and collegiality

As we await the election of a new pope, it is significant that so many church people and theologians have returned to the theme of collegiality or the role of bishops in leading guiding and teaching the church.para.   Cardinal Ouellet himself among the papabiles has quoted para 22 of Lumen Gentium and the tensions which still exist as to what the Council Fathers had intended by it.  After the Council Pope Paul v1 made important steps towards giving reality to the idea of collegiality by developing national conferences of bishops and regional synods.

Transparency is now a demand in every area of social interaction and consequently will also be an expectation within the church. Moreover, so long as transparency is expected, any lack of transparency in the church will result in a lack of credibility.

The crimes of the Catholic Church: not in our names

If the church had listened to ordinary churchgoers – especially its women – so much pain could have been avoided

Pope Benedict BlessingThe Catholic church is on its knees, and not in the way it would like. In fact, the last thing anyone would ask a bishop or cardinal about right now is prayer, or Christian witness, or how to live an upright, moral, God-trusting life. Why would you, when all they seem to know about is covering up sex crimes, inappropriate behaviour among prelates, political infighting at the Vatican, and the existence of a clandestine gay cabal at the highest levels in Rome?
