MISSION statement: Revised 2026

We are a group of Catholics, some of whom are ordained, brought together by our love of Christ’s Church and a desire to be part of the synodal renewal it needs.

Inspired by the legacy of the Second Vatican Council, and the call to Synodality for the Church of the third millennium, we want to contribute fully to the life of our Church so that it may be a more effective and inclusive sign of the Kingdom of God.

To enable this, we wish to promote listening, dialogue and receptivity within the Church, and with all people of good will, open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Accordingly, we aim to facilitate opportunities to share experiences, practices and insights to discern our hopes and aims for the Church in the world today.

THEOLOGY statement:

ACTA is a movement built from below by clergy and laity alike in every diocese in England and Wales. It exists to give those people an effective voice. It is an instrument to establish and promote space for a trusting dialogue within a hierarchically structured people’s Church.

ACTA believes that the reforms of the Second Vatican Council are the only way forward for mission to modern society. It is not a small chapel of selected followers; it believes in the Church as a “big tent”, with open doors. As a free and representative association of believers, it seeks to liberate the expertise in the ranks, so as to bring added energy and witness to the Church in the world.

As Vice - Chair of ACTA nationally, I recommend the following report by its Rome Correspondent, Robert Mickens, was published in the online edition of La Croix International (17 May, 2019). It is an account of a meeting the Bishop of Rome had with the priests of his diocese of Rome, in St John Lateran, the cathedral of his diocese.

I think that it will be of interest to ACTA members and to all Catholics who are concerned that the episcopal oversight in our country is not as Pope Francis expects in every diocese. There is little engagement with the people and little attention paid to the concerns that daily scald our hearts and challenge our minds. What Pope Francis proposes is, in this green and pleasant land more honoured in the breach than in the observance.

I commend it to you as a consummation devotedly to be wished.
Joseph O’Hanlon,
Vice Chair and Scripture Advisor of ACTA
Priest of Nottingham diocese.

Recognition, Justice and Equality for women in the Church.

Written by: Jean Riordan
Published: 20 May 2019

The Overcoming Silence campaign calls for positive reform of the male church hierarchy to bring women into decision-making roles - at local parish level right through to the Roman Curia. Our ACTA Theological Consultant, Prof.Tom O'Loughlin of Nottingham University sent this link to me, confidant that all ACTA members would want to know about it and that that many of us would want to use the resources or sign up to the campaign.

IT'S TIME FOR GENDER EQUALITY IN OUR CATHOLIC CHURCH - https://www.overcomingsilence.com

If you look at the column on the left of the first page, you'll see a list: About, Video, Voices, Goals and Campaign Kit.
The information and resources are very well presented by Voices of Faith and are a great help for any of us who care about the issue of how women are treated in the Church. Many orders of religious sisters have published this campaign on their website - also many male orders. Catholic Women Speak and Prof. Tina Beattie are strong supporters.
Many thanks,
God bless and love,
Jean Riordan
Coordinator of Birmingham area ACTA and national ACTA membership Secretary
