MISSION statement: Revised 2026

We are a group of Catholics, some of whom are ordained, brought together by our love of Christ’s Church and a desire to be part of the synodal renewal it needs.

Inspired by the legacy of the Second Vatican Council, and the call to Synodality for the Church of the third millennium, we want to contribute fully to the life of our Church so that it may be a more effective and inclusive sign of the Kingdom of God.

To enable this, we wish to promote listening, dialogue and receptivity within the Church, and with all people of good will, open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Accordingly, we aim to facilitate opportunities to share experiences, practices and insights to discern our hopes and aims for the Church in the world today.

THEOLOGY statement:

ACTA is a movement built from below by clergy and laity alike in every diocese in England and Wales. It exists to give those people an effective voice. It is an instrument to establish and promote space for a trusting dialogue within a hierarchically structured people’s Church.

ACTA believes that the reforms of the Second Vatican Council are the only way forward for mission to modern society. It is not a small chapel of selected followers; it believes in the Church as a “big tent”, with open doors. As a free and representative association of believers, it seeks to liberate the expertise in the ranks, so as to bring added energy and witness to the Church in the world.

New ICEL Translations in England and Wales for the Chrism Mass

Written by: Alex Walker

Chrism Mass
The Bishops’ Conference has received confirmatio from the Holy See of a new translation of the Order of Blessing the Oil of Catechumens and of the Sick and of Consecrating the Chrism. The text has been sent to bishops and will be used at diocesan Chrism Masses this Holy Week. The oils are blessed before the beginning of the Paschal Triduum on Maundy Thursday evening so that they may be used for the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. As the main prayers are a rich resource for liturgical catechesis these texts are available for download, as is the translation of the hymn O Redemptor and some notes on the celebration.

What do we value?

Chris McDonnell - CT Friday February 23rd 2018.

Not everything of value is reducible to economic analysis or science. Those few words raise a huge question; what in fact are values, yours, mine and the society that we live in?

Gerry Hughes

Heartfelt gratitude !

Fr. Gerry Hughes.

When the Leadership Team met on 17th Feb, it was the first gathering without founder member, inspiration and friend Fr. Gerry Hughes, SJ, who has stepped down to take care of his health. I think it is fair to say that he left two large gaps in the team on Saturday. Firstly, his inspiration. Anyone who has attended a course, studied his writings or been in a meeting with Gerry will know what I mean when I say the rather too-easily used ‘intellectual giant’ isn’t nearly adequate to describe what it is to have the privilege of Gerry’s mind shedding light on your own thoughts and understanding. There are, no doubt, people who have the same intellectual capacity as Gerry, (although I am very hard put to name many), but where intellectual giants have the tendency to look down on people from their lofty height, so that their knowledge can make you feel inadequate, Gerry has a wonderful gift of sharing his insights allowing you (individual or group) to tag along to reach new insights.

Easter Homilies 2018

EASTER 2018

CHRIST IS RISEN. ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA!

I always struggle to write a homily for Easter Sunday. So I adopt the Micawber principle. I start preparation early in Lent and hope something will turn up. I have by now a collection and I have selected two. I hope they will suggest ideas that you can use or discard as you break God’s holy words. That we will have people going out of church on Easter Sunday proclaiming that their hearts burned within as we opened for them the Scriptures, is a consummation devoutly to be wished
