The Gospels were not written for us. The Gospels were written to address particular issues relevant to a Christian community (church) or communities in a time and a place far distant from our world. If we were to give a title to each of these ancient documents it might be something like this:

To get a grip on John’s Gospel is a work of rich reward, and a work of blood, sweat and tears. Our Lectionary compilers decided not to have a four year cycle of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Readings from John are confined to bit parts scattered throughout the other three years. So we do not hear John’s Gospel over a considerable period and there is less time to come to embrace its profound teaching.

There is much to learn from today’s readings simply by looking at the pages in the Lectionary. Apart from the Gospel the two other readings and the Responsorial Psalm have been abbreviated. There is a warning at the end of the Book of Revelation:
